I don't know about your students, but some of mine have great difficulty dissecting math word problems. A tool that has helped them is the use of what I call
'Math Code,' or the use of key words to aid in problem solving. I create posters for my classrooms that students can refer to for help with key words. After practicing, these skills become automatic. :)

We have such a wide range of levels because many of the children were brought to us from the DIF at different ages most with no prior schooling and most with mild to severe learnign disabilities.
